While checking in on Foursquare recently at my car dealership, I noticed an advertisement for a deal for $5 off my service. No stranger to deal sites like Groupon, Google Wallet, and livingsocial, I thought I’d investigate further.

After going directly to the American Express website to verify the legitimacy of the partnership, I was satisfied that this was not, in fact, a scam. So I connected my American Express card with my Foursquare account.

Redeeming the deal is far easier than most deal programs. There is no voucher or code that I needed to present to the dealership at time of purchase. Instead, I just pay with my AmEx card (as I would have anyway), and the discount is automatically applied to my account by AmEx.

I will note that my initial skepticism over the validity of the deal was partially due to there being two location entries in Foursquare for the dealership. The one advertising the deal was not the one that seemed the more legitimate of the two (based on my evaluation of the name, the number of checkins, and the comments left).

Have you ever used Foursquare to score a sweet deal just for “checking in”? Any tips or tricks for taking advantage of this regularly?
